Sun and Industry-Leading Solution Partners Deliver End-to-End Solution to Meet Life Sciences Company's Complex Computational and Information Management Needs
– Sun Microsystems, Inc., a leader in systems and solutions that make the Net work, and Plexxikon, a drug discovery company, announced today that Sun has been selected by Plexxikon as its strategic technology partner, providing the life sciences company with an end-to-end IT solution to help drive Plexxikon's efforts to discover drugs faster, better and at a lower cost.
"Our drug discovery platform is based on highly integrated technologies that incorporate a heavy computational element. Sun's Grid Engine technology allows us to more efficiently utilize the various technologies and applications needed to power that platform," said Dr. Michael Milburn, senior vice president of research, Plexxikon. "We chose Sun not only because of the company's reputation for support, reliability and technical expertise, but also because of its commitment to investment in the life sciences, which is particularly critical as companies like Plexxikon integrate computation as a significant part of their platforms."
Plexxikon's proprietary platform, the Scaffold Discovery Factory™, combines state-of-the-art technologies from a variety of disciplines - including co-crystallography, bioinformatics and synthetic chemistry - in the lead-finding process to rapidly discover novel chemical scaffolds and high-quality drug leads. To ensure a high degree of accessibility and interactive capabilities with such a large volume of highly complex data, Plexxikon selected Sun's highly available and reliable hardware infrastructure and its best-of-breed solution partners, including Basis, Extreme, MDL, Oracle and Veritas, to provide an extremely robust computational and information management system.
Working closely with its solution partners, Sun provides a complete, reliable and massively scalable IT solution based on Sun™ Grid Engine and the Sun™ Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), all powered by Sun Fire™ servers, helping Plexxikon more efficiently run and manage its highly integrated drug discovery platform. Sun ONE is the integration of Sun's award winning portfolio of software products.
"This competitive win further validates the scalability and flexibility of our Sun ONE architecture and Grid technologies to efficiently handle the vast volumes of highly complex data characteristic of today's life science companies," said Howard Asher, global director of Sun's life science group. "Demonstrating ease of integration and world-class performance with our software partners, we provided Plexxikon with a solution that could deliver high reliability, availability and serviceability features and a data management platform capable of processing data on a massive scale. Working with Plexxikon, we hope to help the life sciences industry create a better, more productive drug discovery process."
Sun provides unmatched end-to-end IT support of Plexxikon's technology-driven approach to drug discovery through the Sun Blade™ workstations; a compute farm utilizing the new Sun™ Grid Engine, Enterprise Edition 5.3 software; a highly available clustered solution featuring the number one service delivery platform, Solaris™ Operating Environment; Sun Fire servers; a Sun Enterprise™ server; Sun StorEdge™ arrays and an Oracle database application.
Plexxikon Profile
Plexxikon is a leader in the discovery and development of novel small molecule pharmaceuticals to treat human disease. Plexxikon's proprietary Scaffold-Based Drug Discovery™ platform is being applied to build therapeutic franchises in metabolic and cardiovascular disease, inflammation and oncology. This discovery process integrates a number of state-of-the-art technologies, including structural screening as one key component that provides a significant competitive advantage over other drug discovery approaches. To date, the company has discovered a portfolio of clinical and preclinical stage compounds in each of these franchises.
Currently, the company's most advanced program is a PPAR pan-agonist for the treatment of diabetes and related cardiovascular complications, with the lead candidate now in Phase 2 clinical testing in collaboration with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Other discovery programs include a dual kinase inhibitor for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases and a renin inhibitor for hypertension in collaboration with Servier. Plexxikon is seeking pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners for select collaboration opportunities. For more information, please visit www.plexxikon.com.
